We meet most Fridays at 7 am in the Plaza View Room at Arcata’s historic Jacoby Storehouse.

What Happened Here?

There were many announcements at the latest RCAS meeting; first up was the reminder that there are only nine weeks remaining in the current school year, so the opportunities to help with Backpacks for Kids are dwindling. Check your email for the final slots to be filled, or just help out after the next meeting to help with the bags to be filled!

We are looking to fill out an RCAS Foursome for the Stephen Brodhag Memorial Golf Tournament, which will take place at Baywood on May 31st. Contact Jeff Stebbins or Dick Johnson if you want to participate. (Don’t miss a chance to visit with Rina!)

Ian Schatz shared the news that our scheduled Outbound Exchange Student for next year had to withdraw for health reasons. However, President Ray named Ian as his Rotarian of the Week for his bravery in bearing sad news.

Interact Update

Three representatives from the Arcata High School Interact Club were on hand to tell us about their group’s recent activities. They also told us that we are welcome to come early to their Spaghetti Feed, which will take place on Friday, May 3rd. (The same evening as our Taste of Spring fundraiser.)

Protecting the Trinidad Coast

Our Featured Speaker was Ben Morehead, the Executive Director of the Trinidad Coastal Land Trust. Ben told us that his organization is dedicated to providing coastal access while protecting the natural beauty and character of the Humboldt County Coast near Trinidad. To meet its goal, the Trust owns 11 properties, and controls 26 coastal holdings and conservation easements, from Little River north to Big Lagoon.

Ben also invited us to attend some of the trust’s June events:

  • Saturday, June 11: Luffenholtz Beach Trail Cleanup & Ivy Pull
  • Sunday, June 19: Guided Hike on Trinidad Head
  • Saturday, June 25: Tide Pool Exploration at Luffenholtz Beach
