For Openers …

President Ian praised AJ Gonzales and his crew of Sunrisers and Cal Poly Humboldt students who broke ground at Arcata Elementary for the water catchment project being built. Lonnie Grafman, who has spoken at RCAS meetings, was on hand to guide the process.

We have several important events on the horizon, including our Club’s 30th birthday. The celebration will take place on Sunday, May 7th, from 2 to 5 pm in Redwood Park. The following Friday will see our next fundraiser – the Sunrise Scramble Golf Tournament at Baywood Golf and Country Club.

We saw a photo of Terri Clark posing before her quilt at the Arcata Library. The quilt reflects on our responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. Romi Hitchcock Tinseth and President Ian helped Word Humboldt during their recent Poetry Fest, and our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee reported that our Club and its members donated 37 books to the NAACP’s Black History Month Book Drive!

The North Coast Small Business Development Center

The Featured Speaker at the April 15, 2022 RCAS meeting was Leila Roberts, the Director of the North Coast Small Business Development Center (SBDC). Leila is also married to Sunriser John Richmond.

Leila’s office is part of a nationwide network of SBDCs that provide assistance to small businesses to help them start, grow, and thrive. To that end, her team consists of coaches, instructors, and other experts who provide individual assistance and workshops. She said that dealing with the pandemic has meant that her office (and the small businesses who rely upon it) have been doing a great deal of crisis management. Her SBDC has helped more than twice as many inquiries and clients as in previous years. Leila also noted that this period has led to a spike in the number of walk-ins who are looking to become entrepreneurs.

On Monday, May 9th, the Center will kick off 2022 Small Business Week with the North Coast Small Business Capital Summit. The event will take place from 9 am to 1 pm (lunch included), and it will focus on strategies for raising funds to support your small business.

President Ian’s Closing Haiku

Time flies when you’re having fun
Come serve to change lives
