The Thomas Update

Here’s recent news from our Rotary Exchange Student from France, Thomas Spengler:

Recognitions & Announcements

Although it’s not on the video below, we observed a moment of silence for Brie Toroni at the beginning of our meeting. Brie was a member of Rotaract and a strong supporter of our Club.

President AJ encouraged us to do (and report) makeups – attending meetings at other Rotary Clubs, working at fundraisers and events, attending committee meetings, and so forth. We then passed the coffeepot to collect holiday wishes (in the form of cash) for our server Michelle.

We welcomed two new Paul Harris Fellows – John Richmond and Jose Zapata – and two other Sunrisers were recognized for continuing their generosity (President AJ and President-Elect Maggie).

We gave Ed Christians a well-deserved round of applause for organizing the recent Transitional Youth Family Dinner. This year, we served about 320 members of the foster family community. Thank you, Ed, for spearheading this event once again!

President AJ said that the final figure for our Taste of the Holidays fundraser came to $18,900! If you still have ticket money to turn in, please get it to Rachel or Sophie ASAP!

AJ also told us that our Garden Project at Peninsula Union School in Samoa is going well. There will be more opportunities to participate in early 2020.

We held our annual election, and (in a nailbiter) Ian Schatz was elected as our 2021-2022 Club President, and Brett Watson was elected to the open seat on the Board of Directors.

Although Rachel Damme was not able to attend any Rotary meetings on her recent honeymoon in Hawaii, she did bring back photos of signs from Rotary projects. And we celebrated the November birthdays of Amanda Nelson, Brandon Kakitsuka, and John Gullam. If you see Mark Burtchett or Susan Diehl-McCarthy over the holiday break, please wish them a belated November birthday as well.

Holiday Music in (at least) Two Languages!!

To close out the meeting (but before the raffle), we shared holiday music with the Arcata High School French Honor Society Choir, led by Davina Bagnall. That was followed by carols led by the Johnson “Brothers” – Bob and Dick.
