Recognitions & Announcements

President AJ talked about the Holiday Dinner that was hosted by our Club and our Transitional Age Youth Committee the previous night. Over 300 foster families and their community support people enjoyed a delicious home-style dinner. Thanks to Ed Christians and his TAY team for that!

AJ also talked about the work that Sunrisers did at Peninsula School the previous weekend. They constructed several planters and a follow-up was scheduled for the following day.

On Friday the 13th, we have a couple of fun events – first, we will meet for a little holiday cheer, followed by caroling on the Plaza for Arts Arcata. Then, we will root for AHS at the Arcata Invitational Basketball Tournament (AIBT). Following Friday’s games, we will host the teams’ coaches for a late dinner at the Plaza Grill.

Thomas Spengler – The Man … The Myth!

Rotary Exchange Student Thomas Spengler talked with us about his family and his home – the town of Etain, in the Meuse department of Northeastern France. The population of Etain is about 3,000, and it is near historic Verdun, which is where his his high school, Lycée Margueritte, is located. Thomas also talked about his hobbies and the gastronomic delights of the region.

About our Local Pinnipeds

Featured Speaker Claire Nasr told us about our local pinnipeds – especially the seals and sea lions we are most likely to see on North Coast. Claire began with a general discussion of marine mammals, then she talked about how these mammals have adapted to life in and near the ocean. She told us how to identify species of marine mammals, especially noting the differences between sea lions and seals.
