Recognitions – Featuring the Latest From Thomas!

Thomas Spengler, our Rotary Exchange Student from France, gave a quick update on his week.

We also heard about (and/or from) Referee Brandon Kakitsuka and MBA recipient Bryan Plumley, who aced his final test! President AJ thanked Tami Camper for organizing the Hatchet Throw fellowship event, and he recognized Gregg Foster for ably promoting our community.

AJ also asked the team he led to Guatemala to come up and talk about their experience building a home there for a needy family!

Arcata City Manager Karen Diemer was also on hand to provide an update on recent events and changes in the community.

Final Friday Auction Results

We held a brief Foundation Final Friday Auction, to raise funds for the Rotary Foundation. Here are the results:

  • Malinda Damme donated a Coronavirus Emergency Kit with all the fixin’s, including Emergen-C vitamin supplement and Corona beer. Auctioneer Maggie Kraft chipped in a face mask for good measure. Patti Britt-Campbell won that life-saving package!
  • A gift certificate for Oaxaca Grill and a bottle of tequila were on the block, courtesy of Dick Johnson. The winning bid came from Chris Hemphill.
  • The last offering was a Saint Patrick’s Day package from Sophie Saucedo, including “everything you need to make Irish Car Bombs”. Terri Clark cast the winning bid.

Measure R and the Arcata Fire Department

Justin McDonald is the Chief of the Arcata Fire Protection District, and he was also our Featured Speaker. Justin gave us some background about his organization, and he discussed the consequences of Measure R’s passage or rejection to fire protection and fire insurance costs in the Arcata area.
