The Calendar …

RISE: “Rotary Involvement Strengthens Everyone

  • July 18 – Open Door Community Garden – weeding & maintenance
  • August 1 – The Virtual Summer Sale kicks off online
  • August 29 – RCAS Golf Tournament at Beau Pre Golf Course in McKinleyville

President Maggie Takes the Online Gavel

At her first meeting as our Club President, Maggie Kraft introduced the 2020-2021 Rotary Theme – “Rotary Opens Opportunities”. She also presented her Board of Directors and Committee Chairs for both the RCAS Foundation and for the Club itself. President Maggie is committed to supporting our current members, and to help Rotaract Members and younger Rotarians develop leadership skills. She also wants to make the RCAS membership more diverse, “to broaden our world view and improve what we do”. She also reminded us to be sure to pay our dues – either in full now, or half now and the balance in December. President Maggie thanks Karen Burgesser for providing a beautiful virtual bouquet.

A History of Maggie …

For President Maggie’s first meeting leading RCAS on July 10, 2020, her niece Kaitlyn Bryson prepared a slide show of Maggie’s life, set to music!

Opportunities Abound

President Maggie noted that this year’s RI Theme Logo features three doors, to symbolize that “Rotary Opens Opportunities”. Maggie told us about three opportunities coming soon:

Door #1: The opportunity to help at the Open Door Community Garden on Saturday, July 18th from 10 to Noon. We will be weeding and doing maintenance.

Door #2: The opportunity to support the Home-Delivered Meal Program at the Humboldt Senior Resource Center. Each Wednesday at noon, we can pick up and deliver frozen meals to six older adults who live near the Arcata Community Center.

Door #3: The opportunity to get creative with our fundraising for this Rotary Year. Maggie noted that we have decided not to spend until we have raised funds. The first fundraiser of the year is the Virtual Summer Sale, which will begin on August 1st. Also in the works is a golf tournament on August 29th at Beau Pre Golf Course in McKinleyville, and we are still in the development stages of “Passport to Taste” – a coupon book filled with discounts on items offered by many of the local vendors who have worked with us on “Taste of the Holidays” in years past.

Why Rotary?

One of the features of the new Rotary Year was unveiled at President Maggie’s first meeting on July 10, 2020. This is the Rotary “a-ha” Moment. Maggie described this as the point when you first realized what it means to be a Rotarian – not necessarily when you joined our Club, but when you became aware of the strength and compassion that drives Rotary.

Maggie told us about her experience in Botswana, when she was in the Peace Corps. RCAS had named her an Honorary Member, and we supported her efforts to help a program that helped young Africans who had been born with clubfoot.

Each month, President Maggie will randomly select a Sunriser to be the Rotarian of the Month, and that member (the July ROTM is Carol Vander Meer) will be responsible for sharing three things with the Club:

  • Show Maggie something,
  • Share your Rotary “a-ha” moment, and
  • Teach Maggie something
