Acting President Dustin at the Helm

President AJ was on vacation in Oregon, so Former President (and Future District Governor) Dustin Littlefield took his place for the meeting. We heard about a few events that would take place over the weekend, and we also learned about a new regularly occurring fellowship event. We will meet on the third Monday of each month at the Griffin! The first “shot” will be Monday, August 19th.

We also heard from Katie McGourty and Jessie Misha about the Surfrider Foundation’s holiday event – Black & White Ocean Night. The date for the event has not yet been set, but it usually (for the past three years, anyway) takes place in December. Katie and Jessie said that the event will once again take place at the Arcata Theatre Lounge, and it will feature live music and lots of holiday goodies to help fund the Surfrider Foundation.

Acting President Dustin then recognized Shannon Maciel for transitioning to Compass Community Credit Union from Redwood Capital Bank. He also asked Sophie Saucedo about a “Fabulous” event that took place in Fieldbrook recently.

The Travels of Howard

Sunriser Howard Stauffer first visited Istanbul and Cairo in 1974. This summer, he returned to those cities (and several other points of interest); he told us about his adventures at the July 19, 2019 RCAS Meeting.

Howard’s latest journey started in Turkey, visiting Istanbul and coastal Turkey. He saw many of the Roman ruins, and even befriended a cat who makes his home there. In Egypt, he once again visited Cairo, and he also traveled to see the Pyramids, the Temple at Karnak, and the Valley of Kings.

He then flew to Italy and traveled by train to Innsbruck. From there, he bicycled from Innsbruck to Verona and then to Venice. He noted that the cycling was downhill all the way, and it was all on bike paths.

His next stop was Paris, where he met up with his wife Rebecca, who had been traveling in Northern England. The couple dined in the elegant restaurant at the Museé d’Orsay, where they also viewed some rather well-known works of art. They also enjoyed good music performed by local musicians.

Soon, Howard and Rebecca were off to Greenwich, England, the home of the Royal Observatory, through which the Prime Meridian (0° longitude) passes.

A Report on the Rotary International Convention in Hamburg

Sunrisers Andreas Krause and Maggie Kraft were among the 27,000 Rotarians who attended the 2019 Rotary International Conference in Hamburg, Germany in June. They agreed that the experience was great. The many speakers were engaging, telling compelling stories. There were workshops and displays (including the Hall of Friendship, which encompassed two large meeting rooms). The entertainment was very enjoyable, as well.

They talked about Rotary’s Vision Statement,”Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.” Maggie said this makes a great elevator speech, when you’re talking with someone about the organization.

Andreas and Maggie said that they learned that Rotary has four priorities for the next five years:

  • Increase our impact
  • Expand our reach
  • Enhance participant engagement
  • Increase our ability to adapt

Both encouraged us to set our sights on attending next year’s International Conference in Honolulu.

Don’t miss a minute!
