What Has Thomas Been Up To?

Rotary Exchange Student Thomas Spengler had another busy week, with Halloween figuring prominently. In addition, Thomas traveled north to “visit” with Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox at Trees of Mystery. He also encouraged us to attend the Sweet Beats: Singin’ & Swingin’ Jazz Concert this Friday (November 8th). The event will take place at the AHS Auditorium, starting at 6:30 pm with a swing dance lesson. The ARMACK Jazz Band will take over from 7:30 to 8:30 pm, so get your dancin’ shoes ready to go!

Recognitions & Announcements

We celebrated some October birthdays – actually, we celebrated one birthday (October 12th), but it belonged to two Sunrisers – Vanessa Griffin, who had fun kayaking in Hawaii (but not on her actual birthday) and Karen Burgesser, who spent time with Sunriser Janice Newman, who is known for celebrating birthmonths. Other birthday celebrants whom we honored in absentia included the Justice Of Your Club (JOYC), Claire Ajina, and Rebecca Crow. We sang “Happy Birthday” to all of them, whether they were there or not!

President AJ displayed photos from the recent “Spirits & Spirits” event and the Foundation Dinner North, where we were honored for many things, including having Scott Heller as a Sunriser! We also learned about Rotary’s response to the wildfires burning in the southern part of our District 5130, and elsewhere in the state. [Editor’s Note: There is a graphic near the bottom of this page that provides information on how you can help.]

AJ had a picture of Arcata Mayor (and Sunriser) Brett Watson, who was nearly as green as the John Deere tractor he was driving! And Craig Newman teamed up with Cam Appleton to pull in a 60-pound halibut on the last day of the season!

HSU’s New President Shares His Vision

Dr. Tom Jackson, Jr. was the Featured Speaker at the November 1, 2019 RCAS Meeting. Dr. Jackson became the 8th President of Humboldt State University in July, following his term as President of Black Hills State University in South Dakota. His family consists of his wife Mona and their two children, T.J. and Chandi.

He spoke with our Club about the challenges of marketing HSU across the state and locally. Dr. Jackson also discussed the current demographics of the University, noting that 85% of the students come here from outside the North Coast area.

Here is information on how you can donate to Rotary’s Regional Disaster Relief Fund. Clicking on the graphic will take you to the District 5130 link (rotary5130.org). Once you are there, you can scroll down to find the CLICK TO DONATE button.

Don’t miss a minute!
