What Has Thomas Been Up To?

Our Rotary Exchange Student from France, Thomas Spengler, told us about his recent travels. He attended the Youth Exchange Rafting Trip two weekends before, along with all of the Exchangers from District 5130.

Thomas also said that he went to the beach, on a boat, and on the lake. Busy times, good times!

Announcements!

President AJ let us know the reason that Past President/Future Governor Dustin Littlefield was “out of the office”. Dustin was busy in Denver attending GNATS. No, he wasn’t taking care of tiny bugs – GNATS stands for Governor Nominee Advanced Training Seminar. In other words, he is getting ready to be the head Rotary honcho very soon!

If you found it easier to keep up with coming events at the meeting, you probably had an assist from the new (and informative) table tents! Thank you, Steve McHaney for gathering the information and putting it in an easily accessible format.

Ideas to Keep Your Home Safe From Wildfire

Yana Valachovic, a Forest Advisor for the UC Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources. was our Featured Speaker, and she discussed how to protect a home in wildfire-prone areas.

Yana explained the ways that houses catch fire during a wildfire, noting that it is usually embers that make their way past a house’s defenses. There are several steps that homeowners can take to reduce their vulnerability to fire losses.

  • First, look at your roof. It should be as flame-resistant as possible.
  • Second, check your home’s vents. Replace any vents that use 1/4 inch mesh. Finer mesh (1/8 inch or smaller) is good, but Yana also showed us some vents that are designed to ward off even the smallest embers.
  • Next, be sure that you do not have “fuel” attached directly to your home. This means that decks and wooden fences should be separated from the home in some way.

Yana recommends that anything as close as five feet from your house should be non-combustible. Between 5 and 30 feet from your home should be the “lean and green” zone – an area without plants that tend to dry out. From 30 feet out, you should ensure that the amount of fuel available to a wildfire is minimized.
