Introductions and More!

President Ray greeted our Guests and Visiting Rotarians – these included Dave Gott, who is a member of the Boise (Idaho) Metro Rotary Club!
But Ray also encouraged us to introduce the Sunrisers that we often sit near, to tell our fellow Rotarians something about them … and we learned quite a bit!
Then we heard from Sojourning Sunrisers Gregg Foster (who filled his tank in Boise while on his way to or from Montana for some fishin’), Brandi Easter (who traveled west!), and Howard Stauffer (who attended Jazz Camp).

President Ray then named Shannon Maciel as his Rotarian of the Week, thanks to her willingness to chair the Spring Fundraiser Committee. Shannon shared some of the ideas that came out of the group’s first meeting.

Do What Matters

President Ray noted that our Rotary District has adopted the theme “Do What Matters”. It is a nice complement to this year’s RI Theme – “Be the Inspiration”. Ray called upon representatives of several of our Club’s Committees to talk about what is in store as we “do what matters” this year.

We heard from AJ Gonzales and Tomas Chavez about the Membership Committee, Brandi Easter spoke about the Mentorship Committee, the Programs Committee was represented by Howard Stauffer, and Joyce Hinrichs talked about the Recognitions Committee. Although Romi Hitchcock Tinseth and Jessica McKnight were not available, other members of the Fellowship Committee stepped up with a brief report. Julie Vaissade-Elcock told how to forward information and photos to the Public Relations Committee, and Randy Mendosa of the Financial Assistance Committee told us how our contributions to others is making a difference.

Ed Christians reported that the Transitional Age Youth Committee will meet on Wednesday, August 22nd (see above), and Julie Vaissade-Elcock gave a quick talk about the Competitions and Scholarships Committee. After a brief “derailment” (President Ray’s term), Ian Schatz talked about the Youth Exchange Committee, and the opportunities for hosting this year as well as next.

New Sunriser Luis Chabolla!

During the derailment portion of our show, we welcomed Luis Chabolla into our Club. Luis is the new Director of Donor Engagement for the Humboldt Area Foundation, and he is happy to be back in Humboldt County after 25 years away.
Luis and his wife Chris recently purchased a home in Eureka, and we are happy that he chose to become a part of our Club.

Scholarship Recipient Olivia Reynolds Visits

Olivia Reynolds graduated from Arcata High School in 2015, and she received the RCAS Memorial Four-Year Scholarship. She attended RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) Camp and she served as the President of the Arcata High School Interact Club.

Olivia stopped by to let us know how things are going for her at CSU San Bernardino and to talk about her marketing internship.
