Welcome to the Sunrise Spirit –
the Weekly Newsletter of The Rotary Club of Arcata Sunrise

We hope that you will attend one of our lively Friday meetings,
whether or not you are interested in joining Rotary.
Usually, we meet on most Fridays at 7 am in the Plaza View Room
at Arcata’s historic Jacoby Storehouse,
however, while we are under the Shelter In Place order, we are meeting online.
Please visit the RCAS Website for the meeting links.

Rotary Vision:

Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change
across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

Announcements and Opportunities

John Gullam was President Maggie’s (random) selection for Rotarian of the Month for August, and he showed a video of his recent donation of blood at his workplace – he is the Director of Donor Resources at the local blood bank. John distinguished between types of donations you can make. [Editor’s Note: Only the first part of John’s video is seen in this clip. The clip entitled “RCAS Rotarian of the Month for August 2020” contains both parts.]

We welcomed Jim Ritter to our meeting, and he told us about opportunities to participate in distance learning and to be featured in the Career Speaker Series, which is a program that allows local students to learn more about specific careers from local professionals.

We then separated into small breakout groups to discuss various ideas. When we reunited, District Governor Elect Dustin Littlefield reminded us that the Sunrise Scramble will take place on the last Saturday of August.

Rotarian of the Month

John Gullam is the Director of Donor Resources for the Northern California Community Blood Bank. But John is also the Rotarian of the Month for August, and he shared a video of his most recent blood donation at our meeting. During the first part of his video, John explained the process and that he was donating platelets via apheresis. He noted that the blood bank is taking extra precautions during the COVID-19 pandemic, including asking donors to complete an expanded questionnaire.

In addition, John said that he will be assisting with this year’s US Census as an enumerator. He will be following up with households and individuals who did not respond to the Census online.
