Who’s the Newest Sunriser? Amanda!!

We welcomed Amanda Nelson as our newest Sunriser! Amanda is the Compliance Officer for the Humboldt State Athletic Department.
She came to HSU to earn her degree in Oceanography, and she joined the Women’s Rowing Team almost immediately.

After stints at the HSU Bookstore and local branding company Swag, she began coaching and recruiting for the school’s rowing team, working with Head Coach Robin Meiggs. (That name seems somewhat familiar … hmm.)

Amanda was hired as the Compliance Officer in the spring of 2018. Her wife, Ashley Donnell, also works for HSU Athletics, as an Assistant Rowing Coach. We’re very pleased to have Amanda on the RCAS team!

Fresh From Brazil …

The RCAS Welcome Wagon did not stop for long – we also welcomed Rotary Exchange Student Travis Naman back from Brazil.

Travis showed us photos from his adventure, including shots from a ROTEX project in São Paulo. He also had pictures from Rio de Janiero and Iguazu Falls, but probably his most impressive photos were those he took in the Amazon.

Small School Excellence

Lark Doolan is the Superintendent/Principal for Peninsula Union School. He was also the Featured Speaker at Friday’s meeting. Lark talked about the advantages and the challenges for a small school. (There are 35 to 40 students, working with 11 faculty and staff members.)

He also told us that the school has worked on annual themes and values. Year 1 was devoted to “Restorative Practice”, including building a circle of supports. The focus of Year 2 was “Mindfulness”, and in Year 3, the group worked on equity.

Lark listed several ways to help his school, including the donation of used (but working) iPads and laptops, donations for field trips or to support the purchase of a 10-seat van, and helping with improvements in the school garden.

Don’t miss a minute!
