Welcome to the Sunrise Spirit –

We hope that you will attend one of our lively Friday meetings,
whether or not you are interested in joining Rotary.
We meet most Fridays at 7 am in the Plaza View Room at Arcata’s historic Jacoby Storehouse.

Finn’s Week

Finn Grewe, our Rotary Exchange Student from Germany, told us about his Christmas and his adventures that followed. This included a visit from Grandma, as well as skiing and surfing!

What’s In Store for the AHS Interact Club?

Four members of the Arcata High School Interact Club provided an update:

The Sophie & Mollie Show

Sophie Saucedo is not technically a Sunriser (she’s still a member and Past President of the North Bay Rotaract Club). But at our last meeting, she reminded us that our Dictionaries for Third Graders program – where we visit local schools to hand out the books – will take place on January 29 (Arcata Elementary), January 30 (Pacific Union), and January 31 (Jacoby Creek School). Check your email for the Sign Up Genius message from Sophie.

That’s what Sophie’s doing for our Club – what’s she doing for her own? Well, she and the President of the Arcata Noon Rotary, Mollie Smith, told us about the Humboldt Wine Festival. The event will take place at 5:30 pm in the Kate Buchanan Room at Humboldt State, and it is co-sponsored by the two clubs.

Meet the New Chief

Our Featured Speaker was Brian Ahearn, the Chief of Police for Arcata. Before moving to Arcata, Brian served for over 30 years with the San Diego Police Department.

Brian and his wife Jacqueline have been married over 34 years, and they have two adult children – Amanda teaches first grade, and Taylor is a pitcher in the Boston Red Sox organization.

Brian told us about his move to our community, and his plans for the Arcata Police Department.
