A Familiar New Sunriser

After President Ian welcomed our guests and Visiting Rotarians, he asked Former RCAS President AJ Gonzales to present our newest Sunriser – Marty Lay, formerly of the Rotary Club of Southwest Eureka. Marty follows Terri Clark (his wife and his sponsor) in moving to our Club, as she did lo, these many years ago. Brandi Easter will serve as Marty’s mentor as he moves through steps to earn his coveted Blue Badge. Welcome, Marty!

Former DG Bob Rogers Lauds Polio Plus Society Members

Bob Rogers, who served as our District 5130 Governor in 2017-2018, visited our meeting via Zoom to honor our Club’s initial members of the Polio Plus Society. Everyone who is part of this group has generously pledged to donate a minimum of $100 per year to Rotary’s End Polio Now efforts until the disease is eradicated. Our first recruits were …

Duck! It’s a Recognition!!

Scott Heller is a former RCAS President (and generally generous person – see above). Scott was in Vail, Colorado not long ago, and he participated in a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Vail. The group’s Duck Race was taking place, and Scott purchased 250 ducks at $4 per quacker, for a total contribution of $1,000!

Toastmasters & Rotary – A Great Team!

Elliott Dabill, of the Arcata Toastmasters Club was our Featured Speaker, and he discussed the alliance between Toastmasters International and Rotary International. He noted that Toastmasters is a worldwide nonprofit, founded in 1924 to instill confidence in business and community members, helping them to become more effective leaders.

Featured Speaker Elliott Dabill

The alliance between Toastmasters and Rotary began last year, and it is designed to increase the effectiveness of both organizations in their efforts to help their communities. Elliott noted that Toastmasters is developing a set of eight structured communication and leadership development courses for Rotarians.

He said that the local Toastmasters Club is “small but supportive”. They meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month – on Zoom for now, but Elliott said that they will soon return to their usual in-person meetings at Humboldt State. President Ian closed the meeting with the following haiku:
