All About Stephanie!

At the RCAS Meeting on July 17, 2020, we learned all about Stephanie Lane. Well, maybe not all, but we learned a lot! Stephanie was born on November 12, 1980 in Eureka, and she attended Marshall Elementary School, Zane Middle School, and Eureka High School. Her parents are Doug and Doreen, and she has an older sister.

In 2004, Stephanie earned her BA in Recreation Administration from HSU, and in 2012, she completed her coursework for her MA in Sociology, and she completed her thesis a few years later. She started working at Humboldt State in 2007 as an Admissions Counselor. In 2011, she became the Assistant Athletic Director for the Jacks, and since 2016, Stephanie has been the Director of Alumni Relations.

She is the proud godmother of Svea (10 years old), Victor (6), James (3), and Maya (2). Stephanie is not married, and her interests include hockey (Go Sharks!!!), scuba diving, and traveling the world.

Stephanie is excited at the opportunities that Rotary provides. She is committed to pursuing the challenges provided by International Service, Youth Exchange, and Community Service.

Opportunities!

President Maggie reminded us of the doors of opportunity that are currently open to us:

Door #1: The day after our meeting, Maggie and other Sunrisers planned to help with weeding and maintenance of the Open Door Community Garden at the corner of F and 11th Streets in Arcata.

Door #2: We are planning a new World Community Service Project in Thailand! Also behind this Door is the opportunity to help with the Humboldt Senior Resource Center’s Home-Delivered Meal Program on Wednesdays.

Door #3: Our Club’s fundraising efforts will resume. On August 1st, we will kick off our “Sunrise Summer Sale”. Check your garage and your closets for gently used items (excluding clothing and shoes), and let Stephanie Lane know what you have. And … on August 29th, we will hold the Arcata Sunrise Summer Scramble – an exciting golf tournament that will be held at Beau Pre Golf Course in McKinleyville.

Helping Those In Our Community Who Need It Most

Our Featured Speakers were Dr. Darlene Spoor, the Executive Director of Arcata House Partnership, and Jeff Davis, the Community Services Supervisor for the City of Eureka. Both talked about how the Coronavirus pandemic has affected their services and the people they serve.

Dr. Spoor noted that COVID-19 has led to about 1,400 people in our community who are “without a place to shelter in place.” Her organization has been looking for other ways to shelter. This has led to the establishment of two tent lots, which the City of Arcata approved. Others have found lodging in hotels and other locations. The main shelter that the Partnership operates needed to reduce the number of beds offered from 20 to 16 in the wake of the pandemic.

Mr. Davis talked about the “Uplift Eureka” program, which started about five years ago. the program seeks to match individuals in need with existing community resources. The organization is seeking donations of masks, which they distribute to those experiencing homelessness.
