What is a Debunking?

Each year, the Rotary Club of Arcata Sunrise (and many other Rotary Clubs) mark the end of their President’s term by holding a Debunking. This is generally handled much like a “roast”, where the outgoing Club President is gently humiliated for most of the event. The group eventually acknowledges that the President actually did do a pretty good job of keeping the wheels from flying off the Club Car. Past President Howard Stauffer inverted the usual format somewhat, as you will see.

Prelude: The Final Judy Report

Before the Debunking got underway, our Exchange Student from Taiwan, Yi Ting Chen, better known to us as Judy, provided her closing “Judy Report”. She was headed off on the Western Safari with many of her fellow Exchangers the following day. When she returns, she will not be able to attend another RCAS meeting before she heads back to Taiwan. Here is her report:

Part I: Return To Reality

In Part I, Past President Howard Stauffer  discusses all of the wonderful accomplishments that took place during Susan’s Presidential Year. Then he notes how Susan’s life will change when she no longer holds the title of RCAS President:

The Debunking Song

For many years, it has been an RCAS tradition to celebrate the Presidexit with a special song that relates to the Dearly Departing Leader and the events of the past year. Your Editor writes new lyrics to an existing song, and performs it. This year, the song is “Rotary (Let’s Get Into Rotary), based on the Olivia Newton-John song “Physical”. (Special thanks to Craig Newman for suggesting that we be able to read the lyrics as the song is being performed. I didn’t do that during the Debunking, but I did add subtitles to the video.)

Part II: A Reclusive Fitness Guru Visits!

In the next segment of the Debunking, Former Club President Julie Vaissade-Elcock enlists the aid of a beloved, yet reclusive, fitness icon:

The Finale: The Rotary Fitness Challenge Revisited

President Susan competes with her predecessor (Past President Howard) and her successor (President-Elect Dustin) in a planking contest. This is followed by a lesson in Neo-Geometry from Gregg Foster.

Thank you, Susan, for an amazing year of Rotary!
You can relax now …
