Welcome to the Sunrise Spirit –
the Weekly Newsletter of The Rotary Club of Arcata Sunrise

We hope that you will attend one of our lively Friday meetings,
whether or not you are interested in joining Rotary.
Usually, we meet on most Fridays at 7 am in the Plaza View Room
at Arcata’s historic Jacoby Storehouse,
however, during the COVID-19 pandemic, we are meeting online.
Please visit the RCAS Website for the meeting links.

Rotary Vision:

Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change
across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

The Calendar …

RISE: “Rotary Involvement Strengthens Everyone

  • November 11-14 – The Zone Institute, tentatively scheduled for Tuscon, Arizona
  • October 8, 2021 – The North Coast Ethics in Business Awards
  • June 4-8, 2022 – The 2022 Rotary International Convention in Houston, Texas.

Gratitude and Fellowship …

Following the introduction of our guests, Tomas Chavez shared some of the things that he is grateful for. These included our Rotary Club, his amazing life partner Heidi and their family. Tomas said that the family will be expanding soon, as well!

Maggie’s Rotarian of the Month was Malinda Damme-Hinton, who noted that she has been a Sunriser for about three years. She was born and raised in Arcata, where she attended local schools, including AHS. She did move away for a while, living in Long Beach, Arizona, and the Bay Area. However, she returned home to attend Humboldt State, where she earned her degree in business. This led her to obtaining a real estate license, which is an asset in her property management company – North Coast Rentals.

Malinda likes to “do Rotary things”, and she also volunteers and raises funds for the local Alzheimer’s Committee. She likes to work out, as well.
She noted that the real estate market has been crazy lately, so it takes up a lot of her time. But no worries – she loves it!

We celebrated a few special days in advance, including Gregg Foster, who planned to spend his June 13th birthday driving to Santa Cruz to watch his “number two son” (Will) graduate with a degree in physics. On June 24th (her birthday), Carol Vander Meer is also planning a road trip – but hers will cross the US, Her destination is a cabin on a lake in Minnesota. And June 13th will be the 12th anniversary for Tomas and Heidi Chavez, although they have been a couple for 21 years … and counting!

Backpacks, an Auction, and More Good Times!

We wrapped up the Backpacks for Kids program for another school year – thanks to all who put in the time and effort to make this such a success. A round of applause is merited for Lisa Hemphill and John Gullam for keeping things organized, and another ovation is due for our very consistent volunteer Mike Pazeian!
President Maggie wants us all to “dust off our Rotary swag” and show it off at our next meeting on June 18th.

We held a special Auxiliary Auction to benefit the Rotary Foundation (I think). Chris Hemphill offered a couple of two-ticket packages to a game between the A’s and the Giants on June 26th. One of the packages went to Rachel Sarvinski and the other was purchased by Jeff Stebbins.

Since we were lacking a Featured Speaker, President Maggie asked for suggestions regarding a Post-Presidency Decompression Tour. Several Sunrisers provided their ideal destinations, based on either experience or wishful thinking …
