Sunrise Briefs

  • Thanks to the entire Club for pulling off another very successful Taste of the Holidays! The TOTH Boss, Lisa Hemphill, had nothing but praise for the members of her committee. Lisa also said that the vendors she spoke with during and following the event were enthusiastic about coming back next year.
  • Another reminder: Please send your holiday pictures to President Dustin. He will show those off at our meetings..
  • We heard from a couple of Sunrisers about their travels – Carol Vander Meer talked about her trip to Arizona, Scott Heller told of his trip to New Zealand to celebrate his anniversary, and Maggie Kraft told us about traveling to Boston.
We then welcomed back Bob Johnson before singing “Happy Birthday” to absent Rotarians. We brought it back to Scott, though, and he gave us more details about his anniversary trip.

Blue Pizza Badge Awarded

New Sunrisers receive a Red Badge when they join, and they are asked to complete several tasks (the list includes attending board meetings, visiting other clubs, and giving a Craft Talk). This is the usual path for earning the “coveted” Blue Badge.

I’m not exactly sure what the path is to reach a Pizza Badge, but that is the path that Malinda Damme took! Her sponsor (and sister) Rachel made sure that she received both her Blue Badge and a Pizza Badge.

Which one will Malinda wear to our next meeting?

Izzy’s Week (Plus)

Exchange Student Izzy had a lot going on during the time we were off. She reported on the Bluesbuster trip to San Francisco (with her friends from the Rotary Youth Exchange program) and her weekend with a friend. And of course, she talked about her Thanksgiving experience.

Her Host Dad, Steve McHaney, told us that Izzy is getting a new Host Family this week. He also wanted us all to know what a delight it has been bringing Izzy into his family.

Appropriate Technology:
A Floating Garden and Catching the Rain

Lonny Grafman teaches at Humboldt State University, and he has visited our Club previously to talk about appropriate technology – that is, using technology in a way that is suitable for a specific area.

Lonny’s talk on December 1, 2017 focused on a barge in New York Harbor, which brought gardening ideas to local residents, and he also discussed the benefits and techniques of rainwater catchment.

“I’ve got the whole meeting in my head!”
